Victorian Photocollage, Juan Pedro Chabalgoity
Chabalgoity, Juan Pedro (1848 – 1909)
Pair of cartes-de-visite, c. 1875. 4 1/8 x 2 ½” each. Uruguay. Lithographs with mounted cut-out albumen prints. Photographer’s credit on recto, and logo on verso of each. Overall good condition.
These rare Cartes de Visite showcase the art of Victorian photocollage, a much sought-after genre that has been the subject of books and the 2010 museum exhibition, Playing With Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage (Art Institute of Chicago). These utterly charming pre-digital collages are the work of J.P. Chabalgoity, a Basque photographer who moved to Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1870, opening a fashionable portrait studio and becoming the patriarch of a renowned family of Uruguayan photographers.
