Barbara Levine runs Project b, a curatorial services company specializing in archives, collections, and vernacular photography sales and projects. Clients include museums, galleries, libraries, community and cultural centers, artists, collectors and advertising agencies. Services include curatorial concepts and collection development; web and publications consulting; coaching artists on exhibitions and outreach needs and working with collectors on presentation, archive, and commemorative projects.
Ms. Levine's, Finding Frida Kahlo (Princeton Architectural Press in 2009) was featured in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, on BBC Radio and NPR and earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly. Recent projects include the first ever publications on early vernacular photograph albums, Around The World: The Grand Tour in Photo Albums and Snapshot Chronicles: Inventing the American Photo Album. The exhibition Snapshot Chronicles opened at the Cooley Gallery at Reed College and then traveled to the San Francisco Main Public Library gallery. Recently, Levine's collection of early vernacular photograph albums was acquired by The International Center of Photography. Other notable collection projects include, Out At the Library - the San Francisco Public Library's celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center and Archive. The exhibition traveled to libraries across the country and was accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue and online exhibit. To commemorate its history upon innauguration of it's new building, Levine and colleagues created a permanent installation at the Jewish Community Center San Francisco featuring an innovative interpretation of a mosaic tile design with embedded video showing artifacts from the Center's archives. Barbara's personal collection of antique dexterity puzzles was the subject of the San Francisco Main Public Library's exhibition, In The Palm Of Your Hand: Dexterity Games 1880-1960.
Barbara was the former Director of Exhibitions at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and was the Deputy Director of The Contemporary Jewish Museum.
