about project b and Barbara Levine
Project b is an artistic and intellectual destination: a world of objects, artifacts and ideas the obsession of Barbara Levine, curator, collector, and artist.
At Project b you can purchase exceptional vintage photography and other curiosities, learn about antique dexterity puzzles and visit the gallery for unusual on-line exhibits. The variety and quality of the collections and subjects are electrifying. Project b's vernacular photography albums, snapshots and antique toys and games have been acquired by the likes of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Reed College, advertising agencies, and a host of enchanted individuals.
As a long time museum professional, Barbara Levine also offers exhibition and curatorial services. Her most recent projects include the first ever publications on early vernacular photograph albums. Around The World: The Grand Tour in Photo Albums was released by Princeton Architectural Press in November 2007 and in 2006, Levine's first book Snapshot Chronicles: Inventing the American Photo Album received the prestigious American Institute of Graphic Arts, 50 best book covers of the year award. In that same year she curated the traveling show Snapshot Chronicles which opened at the the Cooley Gallery at Reed College and then traveled to San Francisco. In 2005 she curated Out At the Library - the San Francisco Public Library's celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center and Archive. The exhibition was accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, online exhibit, and the show is touring libraries across the country thru 2008.
From 2001-2005 Levine was the Deputy Director of the Contemporary Jewish Museum. During her five years The CJM grew considerably including planning for a new Daniel Libeskind designed building scheduled to open in 2008. Prior to that, Barbara was the Director of Exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for eleven years. There, she played a critical role in the strategic infrastructure and planning process that led to the museum's successful transition and management of its new building, programs, and audiences.
Barbara has developed temporary and site specific permanent projects for the Bay Area Video Coalition, SUNY New York, the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and a select group of corporations, artists, and design firms. Levine's 2002 exhibition In the Palm of Your Hand: Dexterity Games 1880-1960, featured her rich historical collection of dexterity puzzles at the San Francisco Public Library. Dexterity games are the precursuors to todays hand held games and the exhibition was the first ever on these objects that many affectionately refer to as 'your grandfather's gameboy.
An artist in her own right, Levine is an accomplished mixed-media sculptor and photographer, and has exhibited her work in the United States and abroad.
